Heath D. Skinner, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Hillman Fellow for Innovative Cancer Research at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Dr. Skinner maintains an active, translational research laboratory focused upon identifying novel, clinically targetable biomarkers of resistance to radiation. His group utilizes "big data" approaches to clinical specimens as well as in vivo screening techniques to generate novel targets for study. These targets are then further investigated in vitro, to elicit insights regarding mechanisms of radioresistance. Dr. Skinners research is designed to generate insights that led to the rational design of clinical trials using agents that are currently under investigation to minimize the time from bench to bedside. This work has directly led to several NCI-funded clinical trials, led by Dr. Skinner, including a multi-institutional, randomized trial through the NRG (LU001), which recently reported its primary outcome.
Dr. Skinner has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Nature Cell Biology, Cancer Cell, Oncogene, Cancer Research and Clinical Cancer Research. He has received continuous funding for his laboratory since 2013, including three current R01s funding his research. He is currently co-Director of the Pitt HN SPORE Administrative Core and is an overall PI on the competitive renewal. He has served as a grant reviewer for both federal and international study sections, as well as on additional committees guiding clinical practice, education, and research for the NCI, ASCO and the ABR.
