Welela Tereffe, MD, MPH, MHCM
Dr. Welela Tereffe is former Chief Medical Executive (CME) of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Her oversight included MD Anderson’s clinical divisions (7800 people, $2B annual gross professional revenue), its national Cancer Network®, and international nation-level and NGO partnerships for cancer prevention and control. As part of her strategic responsibility for extending the reach and value of MD Anderson’s cancer expertise across Texas, the nation, and the world, she led institutional initiatives to improve cancer outcomes among the underserved of Texas, to elevate the quality of cancer care nationwide and globally, and to enhance provider and patient experience through clinical and technological enhancements. She is deeply engaged in organizational transformation and helped lead MD Anderson through multiple challenges including COVID and hospital-wide CMS surveys, fostering innovation and growth while maintaining high levels of employee engagement and trust.
Dr. Tereffe is a board-certified radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of breast cancer; she holds an MD from New York University and master’s degrees in Public Health and Health Care Management from Harvard. At MD Anderson, she previously served as Chief Medical Officer (2018-2020), led clinical operations in the Division of Radiation Oncology (2015-2018), and helped oversee human subjects research (scientific quality, human subjects protection, regulatory compliance) (2009-2014). She is a frequently invited speaker to forums on organizational resilience, leadership, digital health innovation, and health equity in cancer care.
