As a radiation oncologist and physician-scientist, Dr. Aguilera speicalizes in pancreatic and colorectal cancer research with a focus on leveraging new methodologies to explore the tumor microenvironment (TME) and immune responses to therapy. His expertise extends to developing immunologic treatments for gastrointestinal cancers and utilizing his background in chemistry and engineering to create agents that capitalize on emerging biology. Trained under Roger Tsien and Amato Giaccia, he possess a strong foundation in molecular engineering, from fluorescent proteins to activatable molecules targeting the TME. Since joining UT Southwestern, his work has encompassed diverse projects targeting the immune TME, including molecular engineering of immunotherapies, investigating TME vulnerabilities, and conducting combination therapy clinical trials. Through leadership, expertise, drive, and collaboration, he aims to achieve impactful goals in gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancer research. He is the Co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Pancreas Cancer Program, committed to clinical patient centered and research excellence. His efforts gained support from the Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award Program and an R01 through the Cancer Moonshot Scholars Program.
