John M. Buatti, MD earned his medical degree at Georgetown University, completed residencies in internal medicine at Georgetown and radiation oncology residency at the University of Arizona. He joined the University of Florida as Assistant Professor in 1993 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998. In 1999 he became Professor and Vice-Chair of Radiology and Director of Radiation Oncology at the University of Iowa. He immediately developed the plans and concepts for creation of the Center of Excellence in Image Guided Therapy, a novel vision and space for a new Department of Radiation Oncology. In July 2001 he became the first Professor and Chair of the newly created Department of Radiation Oncology. He was named Deputy Director for Clinical Cancer Services for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center from 2008 - 2012. He has been named Best Doctors in America annually since 2003. He holds joint appointments in Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology. He maintains and served several National Committee appointments for ASTRO and the AAPM. He maintains active NCI funded research on quantitative imaging and clinical translational research (PO1), is an Associate Director for the Iowa CTSA award. He is a frequent reviewer for the NCI. He has written more than 250 peer reviewed papers and more than 20 book chapters. He has served and continues to serve in a large array of administrative leadership roles within the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.
