Dr. Atkinson is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Surgery with additional fellowship–trained expertise in colon and rectal surgery. She specializes in the full breadth of colon & rectal surgery, including inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, anorectal disease, diverticular disease, and diseases of the pelvic floor.
Dr. Atkinson believes in a personalized approach to each patients care. She believes that the best patient outcomes are the result of combining the latest evidence-based medicine with the patients personal goals and beliefs. For patients with complex disease processes, she encourages multidisciplinary approaches and collaborations across fields to optimize patient outcomes.
Dr. Atkinson was born and in Washington D.C. and then moved to New Orleans where she received her undergraduate degree from Tulane University. She completed medical school at the University of Illinois and then relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio for her general surgery residency. Most recently she has completed her Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Atkinson is board certified through the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS).
