The safe and effective use of radiation therapy can greatly benefit from tools that will evaluate the anticipated outcomes from competing treatment plans in order to balance NTCPs (normal tissue complication probabilities) with tumor control probabilities. However, our rapidly evolving modern treatment techniques generate highly variable 3D dose distributions, and clinicians often lack evidence-based dose/volume/outcome data to make informed treatment planning decisions. Thus, there is an urgent need for our field to embrace strategies to more accurately and systematically gather such data in a standardized manner. Our technical advances (e.g., with sophisticated RT techniques) must be mirrored by improved workflows and approaches for data capture. Many existing efforts are pediatric-based, perhaps due to the recognition of the critical need to address outcomes of this vulnerable population. We will present several successful and effective pediatric and adult platforms for data acquisition that facilitate analysis of outcomes, including: (1) Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, (2) St. Jude Survivorship Portal, (3) Pediatric Proton and Photon Therapy Comparison Cohort, (4) University of Michigan Learning Health System, and (6)a system developed at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. We will learn about various issues that include: how patients are "enrolled," approaches to grading and scoring input, data access, and reporting and analysis. We will describe the rationale for standardizing our work to facilitate the collection of discrete patient data into an electronic platform, pooling/sharing, and the role that academic journals may/can play in this endeavor.
