Deborah Watkins Bruner, RN, PhD, FAAN, is Senior VP for Research at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, and Professor and Robert W. Woodruff Chair in Nursing, Professor of Radiation Oncology. She is an internationally renowned researcher and clinical trialist with a focus on patient reported outcomes, symptom management, and comparative effectiveness of radiotherapy modalities. Her current research focuses on cancer and the microbiome. She is the first and only nurse to be the PI of one of the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Clinical Trials Cooperative Groups, leading first the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) Cancer Control Program, and for the past 10 years has served as contact PI for the NRG Oncology National Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). She is or has been a member of or led numerous NCI committees related to clinical trials including serving in previous appointments/roles as a Presidential appointee to the NCI National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB): the Clinical Trials and Translation Research Advisory Committee (CTAC); and serving for 6 years as inaugural chair of the NCI Symptom Management and Health Related Quality of Life steering committee. She has been chair or co-chair of 17 national clinical trials, several of which have led to changes in clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Bruner earned her PhD in Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania and has been continuously funded since 1998, culminating in her ranking among the top 5% of all NIH funded investigators in the world since 2012 according to the Blue Ridge Institute.
