Dr. Steinberg holds the academic rank of Professor and is the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He publishes and speaks on issues related to health policy including delivery and quality of care, patient safety, evidence based validation of emerging technology, healthcare economics, disparity and value as well on a variety of clinical oncology topics. He currently serves as Director of Clinical Affairs for the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCLA.
Dr. Steinberg has been influential on a national level in providing input regarding health policy and economic issues on behalf of patients and his specialty through his various leadership roles. He is the founding Chair of the Health Policy Council of American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and from 2010 to 2014, he was ASTRO’s President and Chairman of the Board. In 2017, Dr. Steinberg received the ASTRO Gold Medal for his contributions advancing patient care, research and service to the specialty. Dr. Steinberg served for 8 years as the radiation oncology representative to the American Medical Associations CPT Editorial Panel and two terms on the CMS Medicare Evidence and Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC).
In 2012, Dr. Steinberg was elected and then appointed by the Vice Chancellor as Chair of the Clinical Chairs in the David Geffen School of Medicine. He was re-elected and appointed to this position again in 2017. He also currently serves on the Governing Group of UCLA Health.
