Dr. Sean Pitroda is a radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of metastatic cancers. In addition, Dr. Pitroda has developed a translational research program focused on fundamentally understanding how cancer spreads and developing novel therapeutic approaches to treat and prevent metastasis. Located within the Ludwig Center for Metastasis Research at The University of Chicago, his laboratory utilizes integrative molecular analyses of clinical metastases, bioinformatics and computational tools, tumor models, molecular biology, immunologic analyses, and statistical modeling towards three translational research goals: (1) mechanistic determinants leading to the phenotypic spectrum of clinical metastases, (2) strategies to augment local and systemic responses to immune checkpoint blockade in advanced cancers, and (3) identification of prognostic and therapy predictive clinical biomarkers. Dr. Pitrodas work will ultimately have important implications in the delineation of those patients with potentially curable metastatic disease from those whose few metastases are part of a large cascade of widespread disease. In addition, his studies will inform strategies to optimize the integration of local ablative therapies with systemic agents, thereby advancing the paradigm for the treatment of metastatic cancers.
