International 01 - Implementing Innovations for Radiotherapy Delivery in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Challenges and Opportunities

This session will explore contemporary challenges and opportunities for implementing recent innovations for the delivery of radiotherapy in low- and middle-income countries. The session features expert speakers from diverse regions of the world, each with experience navigating the clinical application of technical innovations in radiation oncology. Dr. Mahantshetty will report on an initiative to establish an image-guided brachytherapy program in India, which could serve as a model for clinics in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Moraes will discuss the instrumental role of hypofractionation in enhancing the accessibility of radiation therapy in resource-limited settings. Dr. Schuffenegger will share experiences and lessons learned while establishing and operationalizing a stereotactic body radiation therapy program in Chile. Dr. Selek will discuss motion management techniques for radiation therapy delivery and the implementation of these in Turkey, describing approaches that have potential to improve clinical outcomes for patients in resource-limited settings. Lastly, Dr. la Mata will present real-world data emerging from a review of outcomes at a clinic in Mexico following implementation of advanced radiotherapy techniques. Overall, this program will explore barriers and challenges to implementing cutting-edge technical innovations for radiation oncology across diverse global landscapes with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. At the conclusion of the session, the moderator will engage the speakers and the audience in a discussion of approaches to effectively navigating these challenges in order to capture the transformative potential of technical innovations for patients in resource-limited settings.
