Purpose/Objective(s): Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) are integral in modern radiation oncology, yet variations in practice persist. The Radiosurgery Society (RSS) mentored publications initiative aims to provide case-based guidelines for stereotactic radiation therapy in complex clinical scenarios, fostering research, education, and networking opportunities for radiation oncology trainees. There is a documented association between professional networking, mentorship, multicentric collaborations, and physician happiness and wellness. Materials/
Methods: This ongoing initiative involves 30 resident-led teams collaborating with RSS experts to develop case-based guidelines. The first round covered topics such as brain metastasis, meningiomas, paragangliomas, gynecologic malignancies, and prostate cancer that are published in American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) journals. The second round consists of 50 trainee participants, including residents and fellows from radiation oncology, neurosurgery, and medical physics throughout the USA, Europe, and Australia. This latest round has 18 new projects, covering diverse clinical scenarios and disease sites, including SBRT for lymph node metastases, oligometastatic lung and gastrointestinal primaries in combination with immunotherapy, and SRS for functional neurological disorders, among others. Two separate surveys were sent out to the trainees and mentors to assess their experience and receive feedback. Results: Sixteen trainees and eleven mentors responded to the surveys. Most trainees (87%) have rated the overall usefulness of the initiative high or very high, particularly in the following aspects: collaboration with other trainees (93%), boosting knowledge of the stereotactic radiation (80%), boosting research portfolio (73%) and mentorship from RSS experts (60%). RSS mentors have rated the trainee participation as highly engaged (82%). They have also reported high/very high level of satisfaction by the quality of the resident-led guidelines (100%) and would be willing to continue mentorship of trainees in future projects (91%). Both trainees (73.5%) and mentors (64%) have rated their involvement in the initiative leading to some positive impact on their happiness and overall sense of wellness. Conclusion: The RSS Mentored Publications initiative continues to provide guidance and collaboration in stereotactic radiotherapy and offers a platform for networking and mentorship with the experts globally. Healthcare systems and professional societies should acknowledge the significance of fostering mentorship initiatives, facilitating networking platforms, and encouraging multicenter and international collaborations as important components of physician wellness in the medical field.
